Ethnographs at the Hempel’s gallery

I know what you’re thinking. There’s been a lot of talk of running ultra-length marathons, the summer looks like it is in full swing (doh, now I’ve cursed it) & everyone is gearing up for that big bbq, so it is time naturally for some high culture, perfect then that the Hempel are changing their gallery exhibition….

‘Ethnographs’, an exhibition of new work by award winning photographer Philip Gatward. Made up of a series of beautiful and elegiac portraits of the people of the South Omo Valley region in Ethopia, the show sees the artist return to a subject that has fascinated him since childhood, when he was first astonished and moved by Robert Gardener’s 1974 documentary ‘Rivers of Sand’.

Pack your trunk for the Hempel’s art gallery

It’s changing time for the gallery at the Hempel by the guys at art work space gallery – and just in case you don’t know – the Hempel have an art gallery in their lower ground floor – go there now – go on… why haven’t you gone yet?

The new exhibition running from now until 14th May has each portrait featuring an artist along with the painted model elephant they have chosen to decorate in support of the Elephant Parade campaign, a city-wide event to raise awareness for the plight of the Asian elephant.

Just seeing the teaser above was enough to whet the artisitic appetite in me – loving the colour scheme on this particular piece guys!
